Figure 1 depicts critical factors for the ongoing COVID-19 response. The factors are divided into five categories: viral; human biological; testing; vaccines; treatments. Factors of concern include rapid genetic change; asymptomatic transmission; acceptability of testing; treatments that are acceptable; effective; affordable and easy-to-access. Factors of uncertainty include immunity after natural infection; whether vaccines are effective against the disease and transmissions and the duration of vaccine-induced immunity. Known factors that are not of concern include whether testing is accessible, cheap, easy-to-use and easy-to-access; and whether vaccines are acceptable, cheap and easy-to-distribute.
